Board Games and Parkinsons

Hi I am a design student who is currently investigating board games in relation to Parkinson's Disease. I was wondering if there is any specific challenges you face playing board games (to be more specific chess or checkers) and products/ or lack of to overcome these challenges. Thanks!

  1. Manipulating game pieces in checkers, and chess, is difficult with trembling hands as well as picking up any cards in the game. Good luck, Marc M., Moderator, parkinsonsdisease.net

    1. I agree with that manipulation of playing pieces is the biggest issue. Placing scrabble tiles is very difficult and using phone apps etc makes playing far less socially interactive. Good luck in finding some solutions. Thea DeStephano

      1. I am curious as to how your research is going. If there is any way I can be of assistance please feel free to let me know. It would be wonderful to have some new activities to engage in that would aid mobility. Perhaps an OT could be a valuable resource. Best wishes,

        1. I play mahjong every week with a group of women. It's a fairly fast-moving game and we handle small game tiles. There are two of us who have some physical problems, myself because of my Parkinson's and another woman because of suffering several Strokes. We do the best we can and everyone is very understanding at our table. A lot of the game playing is just plain socialization for us and it doesn't have to be perfect. Getting together with people who understand our physical challenges promotes a peace and joy within me.

          1. Hi , I'm so glad this brings you peace and joy, which is priceless. Having others who get it can be so helpful. I truly hope you know our community is here to support you in any way we can. Please feel free to reach out anytime. Wishing you well. -Jessica, ParkinsonsDisease.net Team Member
