Remission?

Does PD have any form of remission?

At 75, I've had the typical symptoms for the last four years, including several falls. I've been on Madopar and if I missed a dose I knew about it soon after.

Six months ago I missed a dose, and experienced no side-effects. As a result I steadily dropped the dosage intervals until I didn't take any medication at all.

I don't seem to have any PD symptoms at all - balance is great (no falls) - can turn without falling over - even the tremor has completely gone. Sleeping is back to normal.

I wasn't expecting this. I presumed I was in the honeymoon phase which would end with further symptoms.

Is this normal? Has PD gone? In Remission? What should I expect now?

Any help appreciated.

  1. Skip, I have never read of a remission or dormant period with Parkinsons. I suggest you contact your medical team for a consultation. Best regards and hope you find an answer.

    1. Skip has your remission or dormant period continued or was it temporary? I am sure many of us are curious about your results. Please get in touch and let us know how you are doing. Thea DeStephano Community Team Member

      1. SKIP,
I have basically an outcome that has the same situation I originally(3 years ago) visited my GP and she gave me a test re evaluating my shaking right hand and foot in a non rest situations. She sent me to Neurologist who gave me test again and she stated I may have the early symptoms of PD. She asked me whether I wanted meds (Sinemet 10) and I started a day dosage. She transferred to USA and I got another Neurologist that basically has been bouncing my dosage around from 10 mg to 125 mg. daily. My stomach wasn't handling this well and I felt awful and my original shaking hand and foot never went away at the end of the day. I was reading an article that stated that 1 in 4 are mis-diagnosed for PD and may have essential tremor or other issue. I am going to find another movement specialist to verify my situation. I have a friend that basically went through same scenario and was misdiagnosed and has ET. Sorta the pits that I have been taking a med for last three years that I didn't need to take. Hope your situation stays positive and you can feel better without meds. Cheer

        1. Hi Vince,

It didn't last. After many months of being completely 'clean' without meds, a tremor became noticeable and more importantly my balance problems reappeared, so that a cane is necessary without stumbling. It was getting slowly but steadily worse.

My doc said to restart the meds which has clearly assisted, but the PD is pretty much the same as it was before - if I miss a dose I know it. This doesn't fit the dopamine problems that the doc has investigated, but will advise of any discoveries.
