Hi, my dad was just diagnosed with Parkinson's

Hi, my dad was just diagnosed with Parkinson's. I'm not sure what to do now. Anyone who has been through this could you share any advice or thoughts you have with me. I'm feeling a little sad and overwhelmed, but I'm looking to move forward now that we have a diagnosis.

  1. Hi Lexilove,
I love your pictures you shared of you and your dad! I can see he is very special to you. (My dad too!)
I'm glad that you are reaching out to our community for advice. You found the right place! We are supporters of those people with PD (PWP) and their care partners. We try to help you in every way. My own father (age 86) has had PD for about 15 years. It helps to learn about the disease so you can help them along the way.
Here is one of the many articles on our website that hopefully will give you information:

It also helped my mother and I to support my dad with the help of a social worker that was on staff at his neurology office. She helps put in perspective how my dad (PWP) might be feeling and also she helped my mom especially manager her stress emotions related to being the primary care partner. Please let us know if we can help you with anything else. We care about you here at ParkinsonDisease.net.
    Best regards, Suzanne Troy, Advocate

    1. Thank you so much Suzanne. I appreciate your kind words, advice, and for pointing me in the right direction. We were able to pick some books up from the library, but sometimes the personal touch goes so much farther.

      1. You are welcome. Best wishes on your journey. Let us know how things go for you and your dad. Take care, Suzanne

    2. Thank you for your request for guidance concerning your father, Lexilove. If your family has not already done so, please seek out a Movement Disorders Neurologist to add to your Parkinson's team of experts. Other team members such as a physical, occupational, speech therapist, psychologist, dietician as well as other medical practitioners should be added as well. Feeling of sadness and being overwhelmed are very commonplace when first diagnosed with PD. Caregiver support is very important as well to reduce burnout. Please let me know how your family is doing. I care! All the best, Marc M., Moderator, ParkinsonsDisease.Net
