Is severe weakness common with Parkinson's?

I was diagnosed less than 1 month ago - I can hardly walk because of severe weakness and pain in my legs, from my thighs down to just below my knees.

  1. Thanks for submitting this question, . I'm sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis. This community is here to help! Muscle weakness can definitely be an issue for some with PD, as is mentioned in one of articles about exercise and PD. I thought I'd share that with you while we wait for others to weigh in: https://parkinsonsdisease.net/treatment/exercise/. Physical therapy has also been helpful for many folks, and may be an option to help address these symptoms: https://parkinsonsdisease.net/treatment/physical-occupational-therapy/. This could be a good topic to bring up to your doctor during your next visit. I hope this information helps! Take care. - Chris, ParkinsonsDisease.net Team

      1. My husband with PD gets frequent UTI's but has no symptoms other than total leg weakness. It took me a trip to the hospital via ambulance to figure it out. We now have a standing order for urinalysis at doctor's office. Every two weeks. Other than that, he's fine, except for normal PD symptoms of tight leg muscles...massage, hydration, walking with U-Step when he can.

        1. Thank you for your comment, Raionach. I am also prone to UTI's on a frequent basis. Having standard orders for testing is a smart idea! Best, Marc M., Moderator, parkinsonsdisease.net

      2. I also experience extreme weakness in my legs but mine is from the knees down. Several stretching exercises that my physical therapist recommended help relieve the pain and are helping me cope as I am being treated for severe arthritis. Stiffness is a common symptom with Parkinson’s and stretching can even be done in bed. I hope you can find something that helps relieve your pain. Thea DeStephano Community Team Member
