Shortness of breath

Hi, my mom has Parkinson’s and has had it for about 8 years and I was hoping someone here can help me with the current symptom of shortness of breath that happens on the first morning dose of carbidopa levodopa. The last dose of carbidopa is at 6:30pm and then takes trazodone to sleep at 8:15pm. Every morning I give her the first dose and 20 minutes to 30 minutes after taking carbidopa she wakes up with shortness of breath that lasts anywhere between 9-40 minutes. I don’t know if she’s getting too much carbidopa or too little for first dose in the morning. Please let me know if anyone else has this symptom. Thank you-

  1. Hi I can understand why you would be concerned. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a post from someone who shares a similar experience in our community. But I hope our community members will respond here if they have experienced this. I would definitely mentioned this to her doctor. Perhaps there needs to be an adjustment with her medication. Please keep us posted on how she is doing. Jill (Team Member)

    2. Hi Jill, per my moms neurologist, I reduced the Carbidopa Levodopa from 2.5 to 2.0 and the shortness of breath has subsided. Also, the other change was that her primary has prescribed Magnesium Glycinate. She woke up relaxed and the anxiety and shortness of breath no longer occurring since this change. Thank you -

      1. that is great news!! I am so glad to hear this. Thanks for sharing. Jill (Team Member)

    3. Four or five months ago i was having shortness of breath during walks. I was concerned that I was having problems with my heart. I mentioned it to my doctor. Also, I told her that I hadn't been getting much exercise. I increased time walking and I focused more on combining breathing with relaxation. The shortness of breath has not been a problem for a couple of months. I suppose that the cessation of shortness of breath following an increase of exercise could be coincidence, but I have chosen to believe that PWP generally do better in numerous ways when exercising regularly.
