Plane travel with a dog

My husband has Parkinson’s and can no longer drive. We therefore want to fly to our home in Florida. But we have a dog who weighs 30 pounds and won’t fit under the seat. Is it possible to get permission for the dog, who is not a therapy dog but could be considered an emotional support dog, to fly in the cabin? All ideas and information appreciated!

  1. When my nephew and his son flew with his 25 lb cockapoo the airline was willing to consider Felix an emotional support dog as my nephew’s son has some fears that the dog helped calm. I would check with the individual airline as from what I understand the rules concerning emotional support animals has recently changed. Let us know how you make out and the best of luck. 1. Hi Judie, I agree with Thea. Please check with the airlines to see what the current rules are for emotional support animals traveling on planes. You may also need a note from your husband's doctor concurring with the need for this service. Marc M., parkinsonsdisease.net, Moderator

      1. Thank you Thea and Marc. What I have learned so far is that the FDA changed the rules for emotional support animals in 2/2021 and no longer allows them on flights. What I am wondering is if anyone knows if and how to get an exception to the ruling with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s/ letter from a neurologist for example. Any info appreciated!

        1. Hi Judie I understand completely you not wanting to have your dog travel in cargo but other than an official request from your neurologist and a discussion with the airline officials I don’t know of any other options. The airlines have become very strict about making any exceptions and your dog is not a certified service dog. It is unfortunate that this ruling came about due to some unreasonable demands from passengers in the past.I am sorry you are being put in this position . Wishing you the very best of luck. Let us know the outcome. Thea

          1. thanks Thea. It doesn’t look promising from the research I have done but I will continue to pursue it as you suggest. Also checking Amtrak as a possibility. Thank you for your responses.
