First Parkinson's and now Lewy Body Dementia

My mother was diagnosed 3.5 years ago with Parkinson's, which has been managed pretty well. Balance is really the main issue. However, 2.5 months ago she had a massive change resulting in memory & confusion issues. It really felt like over night. There were several MRI, PET Scans, blood work and nothing showing infections (other than a UTI that was treated), stroke, seizure, nor signs of Alzheimer's. She's currently in the hospital after a serious bout of delusions, paranoia and irrational distrust of myself and my dad (which never occurred before) and it was truly a safety risk for her. The neurologists now feel she has Lewy Body Dementia. My dad is her caregiver and I live 5 min away with my family. I feel devastated we may never get her back (cognitively), scared what the future my hold and just plain sad she's in this state. Such a ruthless disease

    1. Hello, I'm so sorry that you are going thru this situation with your mother. I'm going thru similar but different issues with my father. He is 87 and has PD and has had dementia for a few years now. He was recently hospitalized for another of many UTI's and now he is in a rehab facility. We have made the tough decision to have my father live at the long term care portion of this health care facility upon recommendation of his care team. I hope you find a social worker (thru the hospital or thru your mother's neurology office) to help you come up with a care plan and resources for your mother. Please let us know how you are doing. All the best, Suzanne Troy, ParkinsonsDisease.net team member

      1. Suzanne I am so sorry to hear about your father. I am sure this must have been a difficult decision. He will receive the care he needs and is in the right place considering the recommendations of his care team. I wish you all the best.
