Diagnosis

Are there any definitive tests nowadays to confirm parkinsons. My dad is 84 and has Parkinson's for 18 years. I feel he may have been misdiagnosed way back then. But if he was and really didn't have it I'm sure the meds have taken their toll. He only has a slight tremor in his hand for 15 of the years. He did have a bad fall 3 years ago and has not been able to walk since. His legs are very strong but he just has zero balance. He's also declined cognitive wise a lot since the fall. Thanks

  1. Hello my heart goes out to you both. When it comes to PD, symptoms can overlap with other conditions, which can make diagnosing a challenge. I would recommend seeking out a specialist. I shared an article on this topic, which includes a link to a search tool - https://parkinsonsdisease.net/answers/find-a-movement-disorder-specialist. Unfortunately science has not been able to create a single test to diagnosis PD. The following article goes into some detail on how a diagnosis is obtained - https://parkinsonsdisease.net/diagnosis. I also shared an article on symptoms commonly associated with PD here -https://parkinsonsdisease.net/symptoms. I truly hope your dad's medical team can get to the root cause of his symptoms. Wishing you both well. -Jessica (Team Member)
