Is Parkinson's hereditary?

My dad had PD. None of his siblings had it. However, my concern is will I get PD as I age? How much, if any, is inherited?

  1. Hi Arlicohe,

Thanks for taking the time to reach out. I appreciate how concerning it must be to wonder about the inheritability of Parkinson's Disease if your dad is suffering from it. At this time, it appears that most cases of PD occur sporadically, with a small percentage, about 15% showing a genetic link. 1. I think this is not as straight forward as the medics will have us think. My farther was diagnosed first in our family followed by my mother, then 6 years ago I was diagnosed followed by my older sister one year later and my younger brother last year (2017). I have one younger brother left who is 57, that has shown no signs yet? Interestingly no on either of my parents side have been diagnosed nor did their paternal parents, that we are aware of.
