Therapy eligibilty

A service provider for PT has discharged me because the result of the service is maintenance not "progress over time." Yet, a chief characteristic of Parkinson's is that does not show progress but that maintenance is possible. Providers should factor this as they determine who is eligible for PT (or other) service.
Because I have maintained but not improved, my PT is no longer covered and self-pay is prohibitively expensive. Familiar? Similar? Do I need to become a crusader for coverage?

  1. Hello, I'm sorry that you had this experience with one provider. From personal experience for my father, he had a wonderful OT/PT who continued his therapy over a period of 4-5 years. The key to getting continuous care is the provider needs to qualify your care as necessary as PD is usually a "fall risk" therefore necessary. I hope this helps. 1. Thanks. Yes, my position is that my therapist "discharged" me prematurely. I am working toward a reconsideration.

      1. , Thanks for your question. Maintenance Therapy is allowed under Medicare. Please call Medicare Hotline for clarification. Each state has Medicare intermediaries that have special guidelines for maintenance therapy. Marc M., Moderator, parkinsonsdisease.net
