Losing weight

Hi I'm sharon, I have had parkinson's for 2 years diagnosed but think I had it for years defore I was diagnosed. I was just wondering if anybody had experience weight loss since been diagnosed, I wasn't too bad at first but then I started to go off foods, and it gradually got worse, I can hardly eat anything now, only sweet thing, everything else smells and tastes horrible. I have lost 7 stone in the past 6 to 7 months, I am now on build up drinks from the Dr. I just wonder if I'll ever be able to eat properly again.

  1. Weight loss can occur in PwP Sharon. Losing the ability to enjoy food can happen. Sometimes it becomes difficult to swallow regular foods. If you have a sweet tooth, I have tried sprinkling sugar or Agave on all foods, which may stimulate your appetite. Your tastebuds may respond to the sweet taste. You may have done so already, but if you are having difficulty swallowing, make an appointment with a speech pathologist. They can assess your swallowing difficulty and offer suggestions to help you. Wishing you all the best. Marc M., Moderator, parkinsonsdisease.net

    1. , I have had a noticeable drop in weight, I am diabetic and also have asthma and copd. So all this combined does make food appetizing . Sweet is out of the question. I have been eating a lot of fruits and vegetables. Slowly I have been adding some food back, but it is frustrating. With groceries costing what they are it nuts to buy stuff and then toss it. I find what ever I crave I will try. I do drink a lot of smoothies and yogurts. Sorry to say I don't think this will go away.

      1. Awe thanks for your messages, both of you, it's just nice to know, I'm not alone I sm awaiting an urgent referral to speech and swallowing consultant, who should be in touch this week. I also have to go have a urgent endoscopy ASAP. It help knowing I'm getting the helpline need, I just can't stop worrying that I'm progressing fast, and the parkinson's is getting worse. Thank you for talking to me I am very grateful, and I'm sorry for moaning, I'm not always like this. X

        1. I picked up on your worry that your Parkinson’s is progressing fast. I feel the same way. Ten good years, Huh. I’ve had two. And the more I try to live a full life, the faster it seems to go. I’m just going to keep going!

        2. Hi PamelaV, Are you going for an endoscopy or a videofluoroscopy, [modified barium swallow study] which the doctor orders to assess your swallowing functioning? Both tests are different. Best, Marc M., Moderator, parkinsonsdisease.net

      2. I’ve had considerable weight loss too. It helps me to eat numerous small meals, otherwise I feel nauseous and overly full.
