Lewy Body Dementia C/L meds

My dad has been on carbidopa levodopa for 5 yrs. He's 84 with parkinson's plus lewy body dementia. He's on hospice at home. I've had to wean him down from 4pills to 2. 30 mins after taking it, he goes into severe delusions and tries to get out of the door, thinks i'm plotting, says i'm putting nails in the bed, injecting him, etc. It's a mess. No antipsychotic med works. Psychosis is bad too. He says the pills are making him crazy and I need to watch him more or he'll be walking the streets. Hospice just says more meds...

  1. my heart goes out to you and your dad. It can be so heartbreaking to watch a loved one endure what you and your family are experiencing with your father. I truly hope you know our community gets it and we are here for you anytime. I shared one article that may have some helpful tips for coping - https://parkinsonsdisease.net/clinical/capgras-tips-for-caregivers. Also some general information on delusions - https://parkinsonsdisease.net/clinical/hallucinations-delusions. If we can help locate any other info or simply provide a listening ear, please don't hesitate to reach out. We care and are here for you. Sending comforting hugs your way. -Jessica, Team Member

    1. Thank you Jessica. That means a lot! I will look at the references you gave me🙂

  2. You likely know this but since you didn’t say, LBD itself causes hallucinations and paranoia. Those symptoms are significantly more problematic than the PD like symptoms that are managed by C/L. Does he take any specific medication for LBD?

    1. He takes C/L. Nothing else for LBD. He takes Lyrica and 5mg oxycodone as needed for pain. He's had to get off of most meds because they were worsening his RBD and delusions. I can hardly approach him without him thinking I'm going to do something to him. He blames everything on the meds and will spit it out or refuse to open his mouth. Paranoid about food too. Thx for replying!
