Swallowing

The muscles in the back of my throat have stopped working. I was just told today that I need to be on an all liquid diet because of the risk of aspiration. I can’t imagine how I am going to live like this. Does anyone have similar issues or suggestions?

  1. slP]Audryrose, I am a speech pathologist[SLP] [who also has PD. You may have done so already, it is advisable to visit a SLP to evaluate and treat your swallowing difficulty. Best, Marc M., parkinsonsdisease.net, Advocate

    1. I’ve had a FEEs test and a modified barium swallow. I have aspirated 2x and ended up in the hospital. It’s like my swallowing got bad really quickly.

    2. I have had a lot of choking lately

      1. Thank you for your comment, Heinz. As a Speech Pathologist [SLP] who has PD, you may have already considered making an appointment to be evaluated by a SLP who treats PwP that have swallowing difficulties. They can give you therapy on safe swallowing techniques. Best, Marc M., Advocate, parkinsonsdisease.net

    3. The best thing I ever did was to have an SLP test and the evaluation taught me many ways to deal w /swallowing difficulties. I am about to see a gastroenterologist for another esophageal stretch as it sometimes becomes necessary to repeat them. I have a very difficult intubation but since I have one approximately every 2 years I am very comfortable with the outcome and can avoid a completely liquid diet.Eating is one of the pleasures of life and being able to bypass certain issues is wonderful.
