Do Dopa Meds Always Work?

My husband has been doing very well for many years. Recently he went very downhill very fast. We asked the doctor if he could start on the dopa-type meds, and he agreed.

He has now moved up to the full dose and nothing, no improvement, no sign of any effect from the drugs whatsoever. It's like he's not taking anything. And I'm very observant and his symptoms are really visible, so even I would know if there was any change.

He's never been in any pain, never had cramping or freezing. Is it possible that the only thing the dopa meds will fix for some people are cramping or freezing? His symptoms are balance, speech, posture, coordination and slowness.

Excuse my lack of knowledge of what the dopa drugs do. I just didn't think he would accelerate this fast. I thought I'd have time to do some research. So thank you for any help in understanding what this drug, the carb-something can help with.

  1. The Cardopa meds help me with my balance and mobility. I can definitely move around more easily.

    1. I can no longer tolerate any levadopa medication at first it did help with freezing and was actually how I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s . I did not present with most other symptoms and was surprised that was a means of diagnosis. At the time I was being treated for another rare movement disorder. I am so sorry to hear that the dopa medication does not seem to be working. Perhaps your husband needs to be seen for a reevaluation. Does he see a movement disorder specialist? I wish you and he all the best in finding a possible solution. Thea DeStephano Community Team Member
